Over the past few decades Roseburg Oregon has become known as one of the best cities for retirement in Oregon. While the state of Oregon doesn’t tax social security benefits, they do tax retirement account withdrawals. It’s also important to mention that the state of Oregon has one of the highest state income taxes maxing out at 9.9%, which comes in third for the highest state income tax in the United States! While Oregon does have one of the highest state income tax rates, hopefully in retirement, you aren’t going to be working as much and this won’t affect you. Something that does help balance things out is that the state of Oregon doesn’t have sales tax, which is great for those of us who are big spenders!

Here in Roseburg Oregon, we’re only a 60-90 minute drive away from the beautiful Oregon Coast! One of the many benefits of living close to the Oregon Coast is that all 363 miles of coastline are free and public to you! The famous Highway 101 will take you from the Oregon-California border all the way up the coastline to the Oregon-Washington border. The drive offers beautiful views, and with the Oregon Coast being a heavy tourist attraction, there are plenty of fun things to do to make your trip memorable!

For anybody moving to a new area, this is a very important question to ask! You will be happy to find out that Oregon’s crime rate is actually 27% lower than the national average and only 7% of that are violent crimes. Especially living in a small town like Roseburg, you just don’t see a lot of crime.

With that being said, there are some neighborhoods I wouldn’t leave my bike on the front lawn because it may not be there in the morning. Of course that’s probably the case in most cities, and a great reason to reach out to us to help advise on Roseburg’s best and safest communites! The entire nation seems to have more homeless and transient population in recent years. While Roseburg’s transient population is negligable compared to most cities, in some of the areas close to transient activity, you may hear about petty crime that is usually isolated to specific neighborhoods.

Here in Roseburg Oregon, there are plenty of outdoor recreational opportunities for you to go out and get exercise! Miles of walking and biking trails, and plenty of hiking trails and waterfalls to see in the Umpqua National Forest. Whenever we get into the warmer months, you’re going to start to see produce stands and farmer’s markets pop up everywhere. This makes it really easy to get your hands on some fresh local produce! In recent years, I’ve noticed that a lot more grocery stores here locally in Roseburg are offering health and natural food sections. So if you have a gluten intolerance or only like to eat organic food, that is now an easier option in Roseburg. I’ve also noticed that a lot more restaurants are offering these healthy alternatives, as well as some vegetarian options, and even a vegan food truck!

With the Pacific Ocean and Oregon Coast only an hour away, the North and South Umpqua Rivers that run through Roseburg, and the mountains all around us, you’ll see Roseburg Oregon is a beaufitul place to retire. If you appreciate the outdoors and beautiful landscapes, you are going to love the beauty that Roseburg Oregon has to offer!

What is the climate like in Roseburg Oregon?

There are four distinct seasons in Roseburg Oregon. You’ll get to experience the joys of all four seasons, but without the extreme weather. Rarely are we going to see below freezing, or scorching hot temperatures.

We all know that the Spring and Summer months in Roseburg are beautiful with mild temperatures and a lot of green, but what about winter? I get asked daily whether or not Roseburg Oregon gets a lot of snow, and the answer is we don’t typically get snow here in the Valley. Every other year we might get a dusting of snow and it will all be melted off by noon. Now, if you want to find snow, there is plenty of it close by! With the Umpqua National Forest, Diamond Lake and Lemolo Lake Resorts, and plenty of public mountains, your always only a short drive to get a Christmas tree, do some sledding, or go play in the snow!

Where Roseburg is located here in Southern Oregon, we only get about 35 inches of rain per year, which is actually below the national average, and an average of only one inch of snow a year, if we’re lucky.

Does Roseburg Oregon have good restaurants?

Here in Roseburg, there are plenty of locally owned restaurants, wineries, breweries, and we now even have a food truck lot! We’ve got some of the popular chain restaurants you know and love, as well as many locally owned restaurants you’ll come to love even more!

Things to do in Roseburg Oregon for retirees

Now, of course, we have the natural beauty. If you’re interested in fishing, hunting, or any kind of outdoor recreation, Roseburg is undoubtedly a good place for you. We also have the Seven Feathers Casino and Resort only 30 minutes away, which offers plenty of fun, live music, and entertainment. Roseburg is home to the Roseburg Country Club and there are several additional golf courses here in Douglas County. Not to mention, the many Umpqua Valley wineries, local restaurants, and everything else Roseburg has to offer!

Is Roseburg Oregon a good place to retire?

You may decide Roseburg Oregon is a great place to retire whenever you consider all the natural beauty and the fun things to do. Not to metion, the fact that we have a lot of the amenities of a bigger city (Big box stores such as Lowes, Home Depot, Costco, etc.) but in a much smaller package without all of the traffic and hustle and bustle. Roseburg is a great place to retire, or even raise a family. But there’s defintiely a reason Roseburg has become known as a destination retirement community!
