Welcome to the North Bank Habitat Management Area! This area was set aside to provide secure habitat for the Columbian white-tailed deer and other special status species. Bring your binoculars and try and spot the Columbian white-tailed deer along with many other types of wildlife including black bear, cougar and fox.
Features
Hikers, bikers and horseback riders will find endless opportunities in this area. Hidden creeks offer the chance for refreshing dips, while high ridges provide amazing views down into the lush forests canyons that stretch out before you like an endless green wilderness.
There are 6 great hiking trails, mountain biking trails, dogs trails and more, with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers, and nature lovers. Ready for some activity? There are 4 moderate trails in North Bank Habitat Management Area ranging from 3.8 to 7.4 miles and from 603 to 1,971 feet above sea level. Start checking them out and you’ll be out on the trail in no time!
Access Points
Two access points offer access into the heart of North Bank – the west entrance and the main entrance.
The west entrance can accommodate 4-5 horse trailers or 10 vehicles and has a small informational kiosk.
The main entrance, which leads to the Comstock Day Use Area, can accommodate 6-8 horse trailers and 8 vehicles. Facilities available at the main entrance include a first come first served pavilion, picnic tables, fire ring, barbecue, large informational kiosk, and composting toilet. This area does not have potable water, and is only open to vehicle access Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
Bureau of Land Management Goals
This area was picked up by the Bureau of Land Management in 1994 on a lang exchange. Their primary focus and goals are to ensure that habitat for the Columbian white-tailed deer and special status species is managed to maintain species viability over time. Their secondary goal is to accommodate other uses that are compatible with their main goal and focus. Current use of the area allows hiking, dogs, mountain biking, equestrians, and hunting.
Know Before You Go
- There is a BLM host on duty at the main entrance.
- There is no potable water, so be sure to bring your own.
- North Bank is closed to all motorized use.
- Hunting is a popular activity in the fall – use caution if recreating during this time of year.
- Main entrance gate is open Monday through Friday.
- Winter hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. October through March.
- Summer hours are 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. April through September.
- The gate is closed Tuesday through Thursday.
- Pedestrian access is open 24 hours a day at all entrances.
